• Reddit stock RDDT rallied 11% in after-hours trading following a groundbreaking announcement by the social media platform. OpenAI, the parent company of the ultra-popular chatbot ChatGPT, has reached a deal with Reddit that will allow it to dive into the deepest corners of Reddit’s chat rooms and feed that content to ChatGPT. It’s another big deal for OpenAI in the heated race for high-quality original content. So, what’s the deal?
• This agreement means that the comments you make on subreddits such as r/showerthoughts and other whimsical messaging boards will go straight into ChatGPT for training its AI capabilities. The financial side of things wasn’t disclosed but it will allow Reddit to integrate new sets of AI tools that will enhance the user experience. Harvesting Reddit content ““upholds our belief in a connected internet, helps people find more of what they’re looking for,” Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said.
• Newly listed on the New York Stock Exchange, Reddit posted its first earnings report last week, showing remarkable 48% revenue growth in one year. And while the company has never turned a profit in its 19-year history, investors are optimistic that this new OpenAI partnership, and others like it, will help send the chat platform into the land of profitability.
