The ECB's policy to cool the eurozone economy and thereby contain high inflation is in danger of working a little too well. The European Central Bank now sees activity slowing to such an extent that highly indebted companies and households are increasingly defaulting. A significant increase in the number of defaults is in the offing, the institution states in the semi-annual Financial Stability Review.

Yesterday: Inflation expectations among US consumers have risen. The expectation is that monetary depreciation will amount to 4.5%, compared to 4.2% last month. Consumer confidence fell from 63.8 in October to 61.3 this month.

The PMI in Europe was variable, that of the UK better than expected.
