Arkadia is an agricultural food ingredient company that partnered with Shriram Bioseed, a research and hybrid seed development company, to develop Extended Shelf Life (ESL) tomatoes. The two companies recently announced a key milestone in developing ESL tomatoes.
Bioseed has field tested Arcadia’s ESL technology in multiple tomato hybrid backgrounds, locations and seasons. Arcadia’s ESL tomato technology is especially valuable in developing countries where post-harvest handling and logistics present a challenge.
Genome-editing biotech companies such as Arcadia Biosciences (RKDA), Editas Medicine (EDIT), CRISPR Therapeutics (CRSP), and Intellia Therapeutics (NTLA), have been super popular among investors in the past couple of years. The genome-editing techniques in agriculture can be thought of as supercharged relatives to earlier selective breeding methods used to produce more desirable plants. In particular, genome-editing is being used to generate reduced gluten content, drive resistance to high temperatures and improve yields, drought tolerance, and nitrogen usage.
